Hard Lessons from David Tyree: How to Own Your Change and Rebuild Your Life

Life does not always follow our blueprint. No matter how carefully you lay the foundation, something unexpected can come along. This could be a layoff or an unexpected shift in direction, causing the structure you've been building to suddenly collapse. In those moments, we face two choices: dwell on what we can’t control, or step into the next chapter and see what it brings. David Tyree discusses this further in his podcast, Catch the Moment Episode 101: “David Talks Hard Lessons”.

In the episode, David talks about how we often wait for the "perfect" moment to make a change — a new year, a new job, or some major life event. We set resolutions, even when deep down we know we may not follow through. That’s because real change doesn’t come from what we say; it comes from what we do. Words alone won’t get us there. To truly own our world, we have to live out the outcome we envision — every single day. Waiting for the calendar to give us permission only delays the life we’re capable of building.

Recognizing that the person letting you down the most is yourself shifts everything. It changes how you understand your own resistance to change. Taking that hard look inward gives you the power back — the moment you stop blaming others for your pain and start holding yourself accountable. The truth is, you’re in control. You have the ability to change your circumstances. It starts and ends with you.

Here’s the twist: your value isn’t defined by you alone. As David explains in this episode, your worth is also shaped by how others see you, engage with you, and are impacted by your presence. Your reputation is built through those interactions — and it’s fragile. That’s why protecting the image you’re creating is so important. It has to reflect who you truly are. Every choice you make adds to that reputation, and whether you're aware of it or not, it follows you wherever you go.

Ask yourself: What are people saying about me when I’m not in the room? Am I someone they trust, rely on, and believe in? Am I building others up, or tearing them down? David challenges you to raise your level of integrity and self-awareness. Shifting your perspective in this way can transform how you show up in every area of your life, and set you up to thrive in anything you pursue.

That leads us to the final truth David shares in this episode: success isn’t achieved alone. It’s about who you choose to build with. Offering your trust, support, and effort isn’t a sign of weakness — it’s a demonstration of strength and leadership. When you invest in others, not just yourself, you increase your own value in ways that truly matter.

As David shares his hard lessons, he encourages you not to wait for opportunity to find you—go out and chase it. Start your journey today. Seize the moment and create something you can truly be proud of.
